India Requires Biotech Foods to Be Labeled Starting January 1, 2013; Imports to Be Most Affected

MUMBAI—Foods containing genetically modified ingredients will have to be labeled “GM” in India starting Jan. 1, 2013, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution has said.
The ministry June 5 issued a notification that amends the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules 2011 and states, “Every package containing the genetically modified food shall bear at the top of its principal display panel the words ‘GM.’  ” …
