EU Plans Overhaul of Rules on Subsidies to Boost Growth, Ensure Market Integrity

BRUSSELS—The European Union’s regulatory framework for allowing government subsidies will be overhauled to promote economic growth and shift more decisionmaking to member states so the EU authority can concentrate on the most important cases, the European Commission said May 8.
While insisting that the new rules would not minimize the Commission’s roles in enforcing EU single market rules and maintaining a level-playing field for businesses, European Competition Commissioner Joaquín Almunia said the rules would be revised in a way that allows for more time to scrutinize the overall implementation of EU state aid programs. …
